The term "founding fathers" is used to describe the political figures who took part in the formation of the United States and assisted in the War of Independence from Great Britain. These include the politicians who signed the Declaration of Independence, those who participated in the American Revolution, and those who helped to frame and ratify the United States Constitution.

Although the term "founding fathers" can be used to describe this diverse group of individuals, it is normally used in a more specific fashion to refer to the political leaders who played the most important roles in the formation of the United States. This smaller group would include such figures as George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, and James Madison. These men are distinguished from the other founding fathers since they not only played important roles in drafting and signing the Declaration of Independence and Constitution, but they were also important political or military leaders during the American Revolution, and were instrumental in early United States politics after the signing of the Constitution. George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison all held the newly-created office of President after the Constitution was implemented, so many of their actions have been taken as templates or guidelines as to how future politicians and presidents could implement their powers. These men are also important because they serve as models of how an effective political leader should act during times of crisis.
