Yes, you can color whipped cream, but it is easier said than done, depending on the type of whipped cream you are using. If you are making homemade whipped cream, it is much easier. If you are using pre-canned whipped cream, it is much more difficult and ends up looking terrible. You also might want to try using a whipped cream substitute such as Cool Whip. This can be colored very easily, and it tastes good, too.

Making your own whipped cream is not as difficult as it sounds as long as you have the right equipment. At the very least you will need an electric mixer and a bowl. Here are the ingredients you will need to make homemade whipped cream:
• One quart of whipping cream or heavy cream
• Two tablespoons granulated sugar
• One teaspoon vanilla extract
• Several drops food coloring

Although making whipped cream is best done with a metal bowl and an electric mixer, in a pinch you can use a glass bowl and a wire whisk. You can’t use a plastic bowl because the bowl has to be able to be chilled.

Before you begin, you want to chill the bowl, the electric mixer beaters and the cream in the freezer for about 20 minutes. You can then pour the cream into the bowl and begin mixing it with the mixer or the whisk until it thickens. You can stop when you are able to form what are called soft peaks. This means that when you lift the mixer out, it creates a mountaintop shape that eventually droops down and folds over on itself.

When soft peaks can be formed, add the sugar, vanilla and food coloring. Food coloring can be found at any grocery store near the cake-decorating supplies. You only need a couple of drops, depending on how full you want the color to be.

After you add the other ingredients, begin mixing it once again. Periodically test your peak formation by turning off the mixer and lifting it out of the whipped cream. It should thicken and form peaks that are more rigid. Once the peaks stand up pretty well on their own, your colored whipped cream is finished.
