Your inability to gain weight may be due to several factors:
1. You are not eating enough.
2. You are exercising too much.
3. Your metabolism is very high.
4. You are not giving it enough time.
Gaining weight can have serious medical implications and should never be done purposely without the explicit instructions of a doctor. I am not a doctor, so I can only give you my unprofessional opinion about adult weight gain.
Gaining weight is accomplished through taking in more food than you burn for energy. Unless you work out, this weight will be in the form of fat. If you work out or weight train, you will gain some fat weight and some muscle weight.
The problem with gaining weight healthily is that a lot of exercise is required to build muscle, and the more exercise you perform, the more calories you burn. This means you have to eat a whole lot more if you do a lot of exercise or engage in a lot of physical activity. Having a young child probably keeps you very busy, so you may be burning a lot of calories in your daily activities.
To get around this problem, many people who attempt to gain weight use a specialty dietary supplement that is generally referred to as weight gainer. This is usually a type of super high-calorie protein powder. Weight gainer supplements can provide up to 5,000 calories in one serving. To put that into perspective, your breakfast, lunch and dinner, combined, probably equal about 2,000 calories.
For those you go through intense daily workouts, they can use two to three servings of weight gainer per day, but this can be very unhealthy. It is even unhealthier if you take weight gainer without doing the exercise. You will gain weight very rapidly and become obese in a short amount of time. This can cause many health-related complications, including heart disease, organ failure and even death.
If you want to gain weight healthily, you can use the scientific method. Use an online calorie counter and calorie expenditure system. This will tell you how many calories you are consuming and how many you are burning. However, you must also consider your basal metabolism. This is how many calories you burn simply supporting your life functions without doing any additional exercise. If you have a high metabolism, you will have to eat much more than someone with a low metabolism.
If you take in more calories than you burn, eventually you will gain weight. The more slowly you do so, the healthier you will be, and under no circumstances should you gain more weight than what is recommended for your gender and height.
