The short answer to your question is: yes, women can become pregnant during menstruation. New studies done by the National Institute of Health have shown that it is possible for women to become pregnant at any time during their menstrual cycle. While it is rare for pregnancy to occur during menstruation, it is still very possible and many women have found themselves in the maternity ward for thinking otherwise.

To explain further how pregnancy is possible during your period, you must first understand how pregnancy happens in the first place. During each period, about 14 days after menstruation, an egg is released from one of the ovaries. This is called ovulation. The egg moves from the ovary, down the fallopian tubes and to the uterus. Once in the uterus, the egg rests in the lining there until it is discharged during menstruation. If the egg makes contact with a sperm before it is shed, it may be fertilized and develop into an embryo.

The reason women can get pregnant during their period is that menstruation and ovulation are not always regular. Many factors can cause ovulation to occur early or late. While ovulation happens, on average, at 14 days, it can be as few as 4 or as many as 20 days after menstruation. Bleeding can also be caused by other factors besides menstruation and be mistaken for a period. These unknown schedule changes made abruptly by the body without any warning are the main reason for women becoming pregnant during menstruation.

Another reason why a woman can become pregnant during their period is that sperm are very resilient once inside the body. Sperm have been found to live inside a woman’s body for 6 or even 7 days after insemination. It is possible sperm are alive and active, looking for an egg to fertilize for a full week after sex.

Doctors for the National Institute of Health advise that using the rhythm method is never a good choice in avoiding pregnancy. Condoms are the best choice and also the only method of birth control that can prevent sexually transmitted diseases.
