Most brochures are made from a tri-folded sheet of legal-size paper that has been printed on both sides in landscape mode. If you were to look at this page unfolded, it would look like this:
Front: Inside page 1, inside page 2, inside page 3
Back: Back page, back cover page, cover page
Looking at the back, the right side is folded in first, and then the left side. Most word processors have built-in tools for creating this type of document.
Microsoft Word
Word comes with a template for making brochures. Go to "New.." under the file menu. Click on the "Publications" tab, and you will see "Brochure." Click on this, and then click OK.
This will create a document formatted for a brochure with filler text. Replace this text with your own text and images as you would a regular document.
Open Office
A brochure template can be downloaded from Openoffice's template site: http://templates.services.openoffice.org/en/node/3067
This file can be opened like a regular document. When you save the file, make sure it is saved as a document instead of a new template file.
Apple iWork Pages
This works more like a desktop publishing program than a traditional word processor. When you open the program, a window will pop up with a list of templates.
Online
There are a few sites that have online templates for creating brochures, although the options for graphics and text placement is more limited than those made with a word processor. mybrochuremaker.com lets you make one without having to create an account.
