There are two components to your credit history: your credit report and your credit score. You can always get your credit report for free, but you may need to pay to get your credit score. While the score is what determines what terms you can get on loans, it's the report that contains all the information on what debts you've had (or haven't had), if you've paid them on time, and who has looked at your credit. This is the information you need to fix your credit rating.
All credit reporting is handled by three agencies: Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax. You can request your credit report on-line directly from these agencies; there's no reason to use a third party, and you should never have to pay for this information. Ideally, you should get a report from each agency to check for discrepancies.
