There’s only one thing more fun than playing with slime, and that’s making it. Several recipes exist for making slime, but the best recipe uses Borax, a natural mineral laundry additive. Although Borax is non-toxic and used in foods around the world, the U.S. has banned Borax in food. As a result, Borax slime is as safe to play with and handle as Play-Doh, but, like Play-Doh, it is probably not a good idea to eat it. Besides Borax, you will need white paper glue, water, and food coloring.
Mixing the slime is a two step process. First you need to pour 1 cup of water into a bowl. Stir 1 teaspoon of Borax into the water. In a separate bowl, combine ½ cup water and ½ cup glue. Stir the glue and water solution and add a few drops of food coloring. Now, pour the glue mixture into the water and Borax mixture. You will notice an immediate reaction. Continue stirring the solutions together and watch as the slime forms. When it doesn’t look like the solutions are mixing any further, you can pull the slime out of the remaining liquid. The liquid can be poured down your drain. It is no longer needed. The slime will be very malleable at first. The bad part is that it doesn’t last forever. The more you play with the slime, the stiffer it will become. Eventually, the slime will have the consistency of putty. It can still be used, but it’s no longer as fun as the fresh slime. To store slime, put it in a plastic zip lock bag in the refrigerator. If you don’t do this, mold may start to grow on it.
