You can apply a curl treatment while your hair is damp, but if you're using a hot method your hair must be dry when curling. Comb through your hair just before curling to make sure you don't have any knots.
When you're starting out, you'll want to section off your hair to make it easier to make individual curls. This can be done with hair clips.
Overnight rollers and hot rollers
Apply a layer of mousse to your hair using a comb; it's better to use too little than too much. Comb your hair out into roller-sized sections and roll onto the roller from the tips up. Clip the roller into place. There should be enough space between the roller and your scalp that the roller will bob a little as you move your head. Leave until dry.
If you're using hot rollers, it will only take a couple minutes for the hair to set. The exact time varies model to model.
Curling irons
Most curling irons have a temperature control: the coarser your hair is, the hotter the iron needs to be to set it.
Work from the bottom up. Open the iron and place the tips of the hair section against the barrel. Close the lever and roll the hair onto the barrel. Wait 10-20 seconds before releasing.
You can also curl your hair with a flat iron, like this:
