Once you have made the decision to dye your own hair, and you are absolutely positive that you do not need professional help, then, the next step is in choosing the right dye to suit your needs. Dyes can be semi-permanent, demi-permanent, or permanent. The difference is that semi-permanent stays in for 6 – 12 shampoos and demi-permanent remains for 24 – 26 shampoos. Permanent never washes out.
Once you have the dye, you will want to test it. Dermatologists suggest an allergy test first by applying a small amount to the inside of your elbow and leaving it on for 48 hours. If there is no reaction, then go ahead and continue. The second test is a strand test for color. Using one teaspoon of dye, color a small strand of your hair and let it set the designated amount of time. If you are okay with the results of the strand, proceed with the rest of your hair.
Remember to wear rubber gloves because the dye will stain your hands, and it is extremely difficult to remove from your skin. Follow the instructions included for mixing the dye. After mixing, apply dye to the top of your head. Work the dye on your scalp and roots, moving outward. Use an old comb to help spread the dye through your hair. Once the dye has been completely worked through your hair, cover your hair with a plastic bag. Set a timer for the length of time, stated in the instructions, that the dye needs to set. For most dyes, you are instructed to shampoo and rinse until the water runs clean, and use any conditioner provided with the dye.
