Knitting is a great way to kill boredom and accomplish something useful at the same time. To knit a scarf, you will have to know a couple basic knitting skills, such as casting on, stitching, and casting off. Making a scarf will require three different colored balls of yarn. You will want an extra-bulky type of yarn for this beginner scarf. You will also need a pair of size 17.5 straight knitting needles, a yarn needle, and scissors. To begin, cast on 10 stitches with any one of the three colors you have chosen. Knit 12 rows with that color and cut the end, leaving 6 inches of yarn to spare. Next, choose a second color and take 6 inches from the new color and overlap it with the 6 inches you left of the first color. Continue knitting with the double length as you would with a single strand of yarn. After 5 stitches, tie the two ends together. Knit 12 rows with the second color, and then add the third color like you did the second.
This series should be repeated about three times, depending on the length you want for the scarf. When you are left with the last 10 stitches, cast them off. Your scarf will have a clean edge. The ends of the scarf can be worked away into the scarf by using the yarn needle. This scarf is great for practice because it uses a bulky yarn and larger stitches. When you complete this one, you can move on to finer yarns and more complicated stitches.
