When selling your home, the goal is to find a buyer who is willing to meet your price as fast as possible. In order to attract buyers, you should spend a week or two preparing the house so that it is attractive to potential buyers. This prep work may also have you rethinking your asking price, depending on the condition the house is in currently. The first thing you want to do is lose all of your emotional attachments to the house. It helps if you think of the house as a product to be sold, not your former home. To help accomplish this, remove all personal items from the house. If you don’t have any place to put things, you may want to consider renting a storage space. Another thing you want to do is remove all the extra junk you have accumulated over the years. There’s more junk in your house than you realize. I like to use the “one year rule.” This means that anything you haven’t used in the past 12 months is of no use to you. Either throw it out or donate it to charity. You will also want to remove excess furniture. Houses sell faster when the actual house can be seen through the furnishings. You will want to remove any fixtures you plan on taking with you to your new home.
Once the stuff inside the house is taken care of, it is time to look at the house itself. Any visible damage should be repaired, including holes, cracks, plumbing, doors, and paint. Once the repairs are made, it is cleaning time. Scrub the house from corner to corner and make it shine. The outside should be done as well.
