Making candy is the about the most fun you can have while cooking. So many different types of candy exist that you could spend all week in there without making the same candy twice. Hard candies are very simple to make as you need only a few ingredients:
2 cups white sugar
2/3 cup light corn syrup
3/4 cup hot water
Flavoring
Food coloring
Pour the sugar, light corn syrup, and water in a saucepan. You will need a candy thermometer because sugar changes consistency at very specific temperatures. Stir the mixture until the sugar dissolves into the syrup and water. Put the thermometer in the pan, making sure it is not touching the bottom of the pan. On medium heat, bring the ingredients to a boil. When it first starts to boil, turn the heat to high. At exactly 300 degrees F, remove the pan from the heat. When the mix stops boiling, stir in a few drops of food coloring. Add the flavoring at this point also. The flavoring can be a specialized candy flavoring, or you can use unsweetened Kool-aid. If using Kool-aid, you can omit the food coloring. Mix well and pour the candy into a candy mold. If you dont have a candy mold, you can spoon the mixture onto parchment paper or wax paper. The candy can also be poured onto a lightly greased cookie sheet all as one piece. Allow the candy to cool for about one hour. When it cools, it will harden. If the pieces are too big, break them up before eating.
