Corn on the cob can be cook in one of several ways, and each way has its own benefits. The method you use usually depends on where you are and what cooking utensils you have available. The most common method for cooking corn is boiling, but it can also be steamed, grilled, or microwaved.
Boiled
Shuck the corn completely, and take off all the silk under running water. Fill a pot 3/4 full with water. Add a pinch of salt, and bring it to a boil. Gently add the corn to the water. Boil the corn, covered or uncovered, for 10 – 15 minutes. Remove the corn with tongs. Apply butter to the corn, and then salt and pepper. Enjoy.
Steamed
Steaming is similar to boiling, except you will use a steamer or a pan with a false bottom/wire rack. Fill the steamer or pan with water, leaving about 1 inch below the rack. Boil the water, and add the corn. Cover and cook for 10 – 15 minutes.
Grilled
Grilling corn is a little more difficult. First, slightly loosen the hull, and pull it down, but do not remove it. Remove only the silk. Pull the hull back up so the corn is covered again, and soak the ears in water for 15 minutes. When thoroughly soaked, place the corn on a hot grill. Turn the corn every five minutes until all sides are browned. Shuck the corn, and season to taste.
Microwaved
Prepare the corn exactly as you would for the grill. Do not shuck. Only remove the silk. Place the corn on a microwave-safe plate and cook on high for 7 minutes. Add an extra minute for two ears.
