Removing rust requires a different method depending on if you are removing rust from the metal where it originated, or if you are removing rust stains from fabric or carpeting.
Before removing rust from a metal object, put on some rubber gloves to protect your skin. You will want to use a rust removing agent. Rust remover is composed of oxalic acid and can be bought at any hardware or home improvement store. Apply the rust remover to the metal object, and let it sit for the duration stated on the label. For deep rust, you may need to use a scouring pad. Light rust can also be removed with mineral oil and steel wool. When all the rust is removed, simply wipe it clean with a dry rag.
To remove rust stains from clothing, soak the stains in lemon juice. Spread a pinch of salt over the stains. Allow it to sit for 24 hours, checking the stain every 6 – 8 hours to see if it is dry. If it is dry, apply more lemon juice. After the 24 hours, blot the stain with a dry rag. Do not rub the stain, or you run the risk of deepening the stain and making it irremovable. Rinse the stain with cold water. If rust remains, repeat the process. Alternatively, you can use a mixture of dish detergent and warm water. Allow the stain to soak for at least ten minutes. Blot the stain dry, and rinse it in cold water. This method is best for light rust stains. It is not as powerful as the first method, but it is much faster.
