Making paper snowflakes is a fun winter project for the kids or whenever you need a “winter wonderland” motif for decorating a party. 2-dimensional paper snowflakes are the easiest to make and the most versatile. 3-D versions can be made, but they are much more complex and can only be displayed by being hung from the ceiling.
The best way to make a 2-D paper snowflake is to use what paper artisans call a 6-point star relief. This is accomplished by first folding a square sheet of paper in half, point to point, creating a right triangle. Next, fold the paper in half again, bringing together the two folded corners, along the hypotenuse of the triangle. Position the paper so that the corner that’s a right triangle is on top, and the open edges of the paper are on the bottom. Fold the left side of the paper downward to a point 3/4 of the way to the right side point. Fold the right side over the left side. You will have a paper that looks like an arrow or a Star Trek symbol. Cut the tails off the arrow straight across so you are left with a triangle again.
Once you have this final triangle, cut notches in both sides. In addition, cutting a portion of the top point will give you a hole in the center of the snowflake. If you cut a portion of the left point, you will get a snowflake with twelve smaller points instead of six larger ones. Once you are satisfied with your cuts, unfold the paper and you will have your paper snowflake.
