Hearts is a fun and popular 4-player card game. Although many people have begun to play it online, nothing beats the sociability of a real live game. To play, cut the cards to determine the dealer. The dealer deals a standard 52 card deck, one card at a time, face down, starting with the player on the left and moving clockwise. After looking at their cards, each player chooses three to pass on. On the first deal, the pass cards are passed to the right. On the second deal, the cards are passed to the left. On the third deal, they are passed across the table, and on the fourth deal, there is no pass.
The player to the left of the dealer begins by playing a card. Each player must follow the leading suit. If they don’t have that suit, another card must be played. The highest card of the leading suit wins the hand. Aces are high and twos are low. Hearts cannot be led until one heart has been played in the game. When all 13 tricks have been played, each player looks at the cards they won. Hearts are 1 point, the queen of spades is 13 points, and the jack of diamonds is -10 points. If someone gets all the hearts and the queen of diamonds, the player is said to “shoot the moon,” and that player gets zero points while everyone else takes 26 points.
The object of the game is to have the lowest score when someone reaches 50 points. Alternatively, the game can be played to 100. If a person doesn’t play suit when they have that suit, they must take all the hearts from that hand.
