Choosing a breed of dog is a serious undertaking. You must not only take your personal preferences into consideration, but you must consider your living situation. With over 400 breeds of dogs to choose from, it is a daunting task, but the choice can quickly be narrowed to a few select breeds. Try not to listen to the recommendations of your friends too much. They are biased, and just because a certain breed is right for them, it doesn’t mean it will be right for you too. You should also consider that a purebred dog may not be to your liking. A mix or a mutt can bring just as much love and joy to a home as any pure breed. Mutts are also, on average, healthier and stronger than purebred dogs. The only detriment to a mutt is that you are never really sure how it will turn out when it gets to be an adult.
The first thing to look at is how much space you have. If you live in a one-bedroom apartment, you will want a small or medium-sized dog. You also have to look at the characteristics of a particular breed. Energy level is a big factor. Sheep dogs have a lot of energy and like to run in big, open fields. Can you provide this kind of environment for them? If you have children, or children are often in your home, you must find a dog that is comfortable with them. If you have other pets, you need to take a look for a dog that will get along with them. Take the time to talk to some experts in the field, on which dog may be right for you, and get multiple opinions.
