This is the number one question people ask about flat-screen TVs. LCD and Plasma are two different technologies for bringing a picture to a TV screen. Plasma uses a color-changing gas inside of small cells, while LCD uses a liquid suspended between two glass plates. Your environment and viewing habits will determine which one is best for you.
Plasma generally has a higher contrast ratio than LCD. This means the whites are whiter and the blacks are blacker when on the screen at the same time. This makes plasma TVs good for a home theater and movies. Plasma also has a wider viewing angle than LCD TVs. This means you can see the picture from a sharp side angle. Most LCDs require you watch almost head on. Plasma also has warmer colors and works better in rooms where the light levels can be changed.
LCD TVs have a higher resolution than plasma sets. Images are clearer and more defined at a higher resolution. LCD TVs today also have a higher refresh rate, which makes for more realistic movement. The refresh rate determines the fluidity of movement on the screen. Outside the differences of picture, LCDs are less expensive and physically lighter than plasma TVs. LCDs also are more environmentally sound. They create less pollution on disposal, and they have a longer lifespan. Because plasma works by using gas, plasma TVs can have problems operating correctly at very high altitudes. If you live in the mountains, you will probably want an LCD. LCDs are also better in rooms with bright lighting or large windows without shades.
