In the grand scheme of religions, not many believe in hell. The concept of hell derived from Greek mythology, where some souls of people who were especially bad were sent to an underground realm called Tartarus. Many of the titans were also imprisoned in Tartarus when Zeus and the other gods took control of the universe. In modern religion, Hell plays prominently in Christianity and Islam. Tradition and scripture tells us that Hell is a place of burning fire and torment. Although it is not told to us in scripture, hell is thought to be populated by demons, minor angels who followed Lucifer in his rebellion against God. The demons make sure that all the souls are properly punished and keep them from escaping.
Scholars claim that early Christians did not believe in the existence of hell. The first Christians were Jews, and Judaism has no doctrine or belief of hell. Over the centuries, the concept of hell was brought forth and expanded by the church as a means to scare people into being good. Much of the knowledge of the origin of hell has since been forgotten. Conservative, Fundamental Christians, who interpret the Bible literally, believe that hell is located deep in the Earth. Other theologians speculate that heaven and hell are not physical locations in our universe, but they are in another dimension, or plane of existence, that can only be reached by spirits and souls, not physical bodies.
It seems that people will never know where hell is, or if it even exists, since we have to be dead to get there. No one has since been able to return from the dead and tell us about it.
