Hundreds of people die every year from choking on their own vomit. Several famous people throughout history have also died this way. It usually happens while under the influence of alcohol or other drugs. In fact, many times when you hear that someone died of an overdose, they really choked on their own vomit. You know that, when drinking, people can throw up if they’ve had too many. If you drink too much or take too much of some other drug, you may throw up while lying on your back. If this happens when you are sober, you usually wake up first and have time to turn to the side, or you turn to the side and spit it out afterward. If you do too many drugs or take too many drinks, you may be too intoxicated to move yourself, so your mouth fills with the vomit. Your body breathes automatically. Even if you try to hold your breath, you will start breathing again eventually. The body still tries to continue breathing and the vomit gets sucked into the lungs blocking the oxygen. Essentially, you are drowning in your own vomit.
Three famous musicians who died from choking on their own vomit were Jimi Hendrix in 1970, John Bonham, the drummer for Led Zeppelin, in 1980, and Bon Scott, the original lead singer of AC/DC in 1980. More recently, reports have been released claiming that Anna Nicole Smith died by choking on her own vomit.
It is always said that if you are with someone who has been drinking too much and you put them to bed, make sure you lay them on their sidet so such an occurrence doesn’t happen with them.
