To say that chocolate does not cause acne is an understatement. Absolutely no foods have ever been shown to cause acne. This means that, as far as we know, chocolate, pizza, dairy, burgers, fries, and soft drinks are all blameless in an acne outbreak. With that said, it doesn’t mean a healthy diet isn’t beneficial for your skin. It just means that the acne itself is caused by other factors. In reality, acne is caused by excess bacteria on the skin, excess oil production in the skin, and dead skin cells clogging up the pores. None of these three factors is caused by the foods we eat. The myth that chocolate causes acne came about due to another myth – foods high in fat cause the skin to produce more oil. This is patently false. When the skin produces excess oil it is usually due to hormonal changes and imbalance. The other biggest factor in the production of skin oil, scientifically called sebum, is genetics. Some people are simply predisposed by their genetic makeup to produce large amounts of sebum.
One large study shows that a link may exist between having a healthy diet and acne outbreaks. Some scientists point to this study as proof that bad foods can cause bad skin. Some faults existed with the analysis of the study in connection with acne. No specific foods were ever mentioned in the study as causing acne. The only real conclusion was that a diet high in fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grain, and protein is healthy for the body and improves the health of the skin.
The best thing to do for acne is to clean your face twice per day with soap and warm water. Avoid touching your face with your hands as much as possible. Use a benzoyl peroxide acne treatment daily for large outbreaks.
