Acne has several names and comes in several different varieties. Whether we call them pimples, zits, or blemishes, and no matter if they are whiteheads, blackheads, or pustules, acne is both disfiguring and annoying. One of the biggest factors in the development of acne is hormones. Another factor is genetics. It seems some people are simply meant to get acne.
Three factors cause acne formation. The first is an overproduction of sebum, the oil produced naturally by the skin. The second factor is a buildup of bacteria, and the third is dead skin cells clogging the pores. Each pore of the skin is connected to a gland that produces sebum. Normally, sebum flows out of the pore and along the hair. When excess sebum is produced, it stays in the pore where it mixes with dead skin cells. This causes the pore to clog. When the pore clogs, bacteria get trapped inside. The bacteria begin a mild infection. White blood cells also enter the pore to fight the infection. This may cause the pore to fill with liquid or pus. The liquid, pus, bacteria, dead skin, and oil, all together, form the pimple.
Pimples can come in several varieties. When the pore is totally blocked and bulges, a whitehead is produced. When the pore is open at the surface of the skin, the mixture plugging the pore darkens, and it is called a blackhead. Another type of pimple is called a papule. Papules are small, red bumps on the skin that may signal further outbreaks. In addition, the pimple can cause either pustules or nodules. Pustules are red bumps with pus at the tip. Nodules are larger, more solid, lumps that form when the sebum gets deep into the skin.
