Although some severely obese individuals may be advised to go on a low-carbohydrate diet, most of need a proper amount of carbs to remain healthy. Control of carbs is important in losing weight, but eliminating carbs, as recommended by some fad diets, leads to poor health. Carbohydrates are important because they are our primary fuel source for moving our muscles. Muscle movement, of course, is what we use to do just about everything. A good diet should include an exercise program. When exercising, carbs become even more important than usual because our muscles need energy. Many people on low-carb diets find they are weak and sluggish during workouts. Properly fueled muscles will work harder and help to burn more calories than weak, sluggish muscles.
The exact amount of carbs needed depends on your diet requirements. Men and bigger people usually require more calories to get through the day. Any diet should consist of 60 percent carbohydrates. The average diet is 2,000 calories per day. This means about 1,200 calories worth of carbs should be consumed. By weight, this comes to about 300 grams per day. Some carbs, however, are better than others. Low-calorie carbs are the best for the body. Good sources of low-calorie carbs include whole grains and vegetables. Fresh and natural foods are also healthier than processed, packaged foods. A recommended daily intake that ensures the proper amount of carbohydrates in a diet includes 6 servings per day of grains or cereals, such as bread, pasta, or rice, 3 – 4 servings per day of fresh vegetables, and 2 servings per day of fruit.
