Dreaming is part of REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep, which is experienced by everyone with healthy sleep patterns, regardless of eyesight.

What a person "sees" depends on their experience with eyesight. Someone who has never had any eyesight will only hear things in dreams, while someone who is legally blind will be limited to the basic shapes and colors they experience when they're awake. People who once had sight but later lost it have the same dream experiences the sighted have, but the clarity fades over a period of years. Some blind people can sometimes taste or smell things in their dreams.

In this short documentary, several blind people talk about their own dreams.
