In 1983, a bar owner in Chicago realized he could keep his tipsy customers from peeing on the floor by placing ice in the urinals. They thought it was a game, and would try to melt as many ice cubes as they could with their urine.

OK, not really.

Restaurants and bars use ice in place of the more common urinal puck. It works in four ways:

When you pee on the ice, it cools the urine, slowing bacteria growth and the resulting smell.
As the ice sits, it melts, rinsing the bowl, whether you've flushed or not.
Lower temperatures reduce volatile compounds in the air, keeping the urine smell from spreading.
Flies avoid cold areas.

If the ice runs out, you can get some more from an ice machine instead of having to go to a store or receive a delivery.
