The current record was set by Captain Joseph Kittinger in 1960 at a distance of 102,800 feet. When he broke this record, he also became the first person in space and the first person to reach the speed of sound without using an airplane. The ascent holds the record for the highest flight made by balloon.

This was the third and final jump of Project Excelsior, a test of a new parachute system the U.S. Air Force had developed for high-altitude jet flight. Kittinger spent an hour and thirty-one minutes ascending in a gondola attached to a weather balloon. He fell for four minutes and thirty-six seconds. The pressure leak in his suit caused him to temporarily lose the use of his right hand, but he fully recovered.

Recently, Austrian B.A.S.E. jumper Felix Baumgartner announced that he will try to break this record sometime in 2010 as part of the Red Bull Stratos project. Kittinger will serve as capcom during the attempt, talking Baumgartner through the jump.
