Remember that serving sizes vary a lot, with a typical cup of coffee being only 8 oz, while a glass of iced tea may be as much as 32 oz. In this case, a cup of Tim Horton's coffee has the same amount of caffeine as a glass of Lipton iced tea.
Why is there such a wide spread in caffeine for coffee? As coffee beans are roasted, they lose water content but increase in size. While a dark roast bean will have more caffeine per weight than a light roast, most people measure by size, so a cup of dark roast will generally have less caffeine.
Even if you get as much caffeine from tea as you do coffee, the effect will be more gentle thanks to a compound called theanine. This amino acid causes a reduction of stress both mentally and physically, reducing the jitters associated with drinking coffee.
So, on an ounce-per-ounce basis, coffee generally has more caffeine than tea, but by serving size the amount of caffeine may almost be the same. Despite this, you may feel the effects of caffeine in tea less thanks to theanine.
