Yes, you can definitely get fat from eating energy bars, protein bars, protein shakes, powders, or drinks. You can get fat from eating health food. You can get fat from eating vegetables (this is a tough one, but still possible.) You can get fat from any food or drink you put into your body, except maybe for water and diet soft drinks. Some people even debate that you can get fat from diet drinks, but, scientifically, you can’t gain weight from anything with zero calories. Calories are the operative factor. Most energy bars and protein shakes have massive amounts of calories. They are designed to be consumed for one of two purposes – as a meal replacement or for supplemental energy during and after strenuous workouts. If you eat an energy bar as a meal replacement, you must do exactly that – replace the meal with the bar. If you eat the meal replacement and the meal, you will probably develop additional fat if you do this often enough.
Two critical factors determine whether you will get fat. All the rest is baloney and, if it matters at all, is so far down the list as not to be noteworthy. The two factors are calorie intake and calorie expenditure. If you put more calories into your body than you are burning, you will get fat. It’s as simple as that. Protein shakes are high in calories. They are designed to be used during strenuous workouts in which you lose a lot of calories. Many people (who know what they are doing) purposely use protein shakes or protein bars to keep from losing weight. They are trying to put on weight through building muscle or trying to maintain their current weight. If you gulp down the shakes without doing the exercise, you can expect to balloon up rather quickly.
