It is rare for babies to be born with teeth but it does happen on occasion. Baby teeth begin developing very soon after conception, in the embryonic stages of life. They usually don’t erupt from the gums until the baby is about 6 months old. Teeth that erupt while in the womb are called neonatal teeth, and a baby will usually have only one or two. Neonatal teeth occur in only one out of every 3,000 babies and should be looked at by a dentist because they are often loose or out of place. Neonatal teeth are not extra teeth. They are part of the set of the baby’s 20 deciduous, or primary, teeth. If the neonatal teeth have to be removed, they will need to wear a spacer to keep the space open when the adult teeth start growing in.
In a very few cases, babies are born with more than one or two neonatal teeth. One authentic report shows a baby who was born with seven teeth. Out of the seven, four of them had to be pulled because they were so loose that doctors feared they would fall out and choke the little girl.
It is far more common for babies to be born with hair than with teeth. In fact, most every baby in the world is born with hair. White babies have the highest rates of being born bald. Even most white children, though, are born with some hair. The hair a baby is born with often changes within about six months. Many dark-haired parents give birth to a baby with blond or red hair. As the baby matures, the hair darkens to a shade more like that of the parents.
