All dogs are decendants of wolves who sometimes would do this to pack the snow. It is instinct. =)=

Mr. Boxy
This stems from behaviors of dogs in the wild. There are several possible reasons to do this:

The dog needs to check for snakes and insects.

The dog wants to find the most comfortable position to lay down. Sometimes dogs will dig into the ground to make a cooler spot to sleep in: you may see your dog paw at a spot before turning, even if they're indoors.

The dog's nose needs to be pointed into the wind to smell nearby prey and predators. However, dogs sleeping in cold climates will point their heads away from the wind to stay warm.

It helps the dog curl up when lying down.

The area the dog walks in marks his or her personal space so other dogs will avoid the area.
