how many people leave their gas caps at the pump when they leave?


i always gear trivia on radio shows and while traveling one day and hearing a trivia question I saw someone who left their gas tank door openthey left the pump. Was curious how many people do that or leave their cap at the pump?

Larry 		I don't think you'll find a precise answer about that - even if there was a large survey, I think a lot of people might not admit to being absent-minded and leaving a gas cap at the gas station :)

But forgetting the gas cap was apparently so common, that starting about 10-12 years ago, car manufacturers started making gas caps that cannot be forgotten - they're tied to the gas tank opening. Most new cars now have this feature.

Gas caps are important because they help to prevent dust and other foreign objects from entering the gas tank, and they minimize the amount of condensation that can form inside of the gas tank. Over a long period of time, both of those things can cause damage to your car.

Replacement gas caps can usually be obtained at auto parts stores for $5 to $15, or at salvage yards for $1-$5. If buying a replacement, remember to make sure that it is the right cap for your car.

Personal note, I usually notice 3-4 people per week driving with their gas tank door open (and those are just the ones I notice).
