Skiing is the number one winter sport but it can be daunting the first time out. Before you can take your first proper skiing lesson, there are some preparations to be made. You’ll have to buy your lift tickets and learn how to ride the chairlift. Some beginner slopes will also use rope tows where you get pulled back up the slope on your skis. Once you learn these basic steps you are ready to start skiing. It is suggested to take a professional lesson on your first time. A beginner’s professional lesson doesn’t cost much and the knowledge you obtain cannot be had anywhere else or in such an efficient manner. The lesson will help you get the most out of your first trip.
A few tips that can be related here are for some basic maneuvers. The first thing you will want to do is walk in your skis. Your skis still slide on the snow but you alternate them one at a time like walking. To walk properly, your weight must be distributed evenly on the skis and you should be in perfect balance.
Your first actual run will be on a gentle slope for just a few feet. You will start off with your skis perpendicular to the slope. Slowly move them parallel and plant your poles. Bend your knees and lean forward slightly. Lift your poles and you will begin moving. Don’t push with your poles just yet. Let gravity do the work.
To control your speed, skiers use what is called the “gliding wedge.” When going downhill, move the back end of your skis outward so your two skis form a V-shape. The wider the back of the skis gets, the slower you will go and eventually stop.
For basic turns, use only pressure. Do not use your body. Just push down slightly with the left or right ski and you will turn slightly. These basic moves will get you started.
