Shedding eyelashes is a common occurrence, but many people worry that one day, they may lose those precious hairs for good.
Fortunately you can take a big sigh of relief because in general, yes, eyelashes do grow back. Eyelashes are just like any other type of hair, and go through a cycle of growing, breaking, shedding and re-growing. When an eyelash falls out, a new one will grow back in its place and chances are, you won’t even notice the transition.
However, there are some circumstances that may cause your eyelashes to not grow back. For example, if your eyelashes begin falling out in clumps, this could be a sign that you have a medical condition. Some common conditions include hypothyroidism or autoimmune conditions like alopecia areata. In order to regain control over your eyelashes, you will need to see a doctor who will recommend ways to strengthen the hair follicles.
Although less common, it’s possible that your eyelashes may not grow back if they’ve undergone frequent trauma. Eyelashes are delicate and unfortunately are subject to a lot of harsh treatment, such as from curling, plucking or exposing the hairs to extreme temperatures. With enough trauma, it’s possible that your eyelashes can fall out, and new hairs will not grow back.
Even though eyelashes are small, they go through several cycles that influence how strong or weak they are. In order to maximize the potential that your eyelashes will grow back strong, be sure to keep them healthy. Moisturize your eyelashes by applying a dab of Vaseline over the lashes before going to bed. Use a gentle makeup removal that’s free of alcohol and refrain from using an eyelash curler. Be sure to keep your body hydrated by drinking plenty of water and taking a multivitamin, which makes hair strong and healthy.
