The stuff that forms in the corner of your eyes during sleep is actually called rheum. Your eye consistently secretes mucus out of your ducts in your eye. This is a mix of oil and mucus that usually gets washed away by your tears and eyelashes. At night, because your eyes are at rest and your eyelashes aren’t on autopilot, the mucus secreted pools and dries in the corner of your eyes. Because of the crustiness of the dried mucus many people have referred to it as sand which started the folk lore legend of the Sandman. Apparently he leaves the sand in your eyes as a byproduct of the dreams he brings you at night.
