Sweating is an important way for the body to maintain a constant temperature, as required for the health of all mammals. While people are all generally the same, everyone has minor differences that make them unique. Two of these differences are the amount of sweat the body can produce and how much sweat is required to cool down.
The first reason why some people sweat more than others is due to gender. Men tend to sweat more than women. A woman’s body is more efficient at regulating water levels than men, so they don’t sweat more than is necessary. Men don’t have the same regulation, so they sweat an average of 30 percent more.
Another reason is age. Older people tend to sweat more than younger people. In addition, some people simply have more sweat glands than others. The range is from 2 to 4 million total sweat glands, so that means some people have up to twice as many as others.
A person’s level of fitness can also determine how much they sweat. People who work out regularly have trained their body to cool down efficiently. People who are fit begin to sweat earlier than those who are not fit because their body recognizes the signs that it is getting hot. An unfit person’s body doesn’t recognize the signs, therefore sweating starts later is more intense.
Finally, some people sweat more than others due to a medical condition. People with hyperhidrosis may sweat for seemingly no reason . This condition usually begins when a person is a child, and it affects from 1 to 3 percent of people in the United States. Certain medications and surgical procedures may also cause excessive sweating.
