Blackjack, also known as twenty-one, is a fun and exciting game to play with friends or at the casino. It also provides some of the best odds of any of the casino card or table games. At home, Blackjack can be played with a single deck of cards but in the casino they shuffle multiple decks together, making it more difficult to count what has been played and what cards are remaining in the deck. There are also two variations. Playing at home is often against another player so the cards are held and kept secret. Playing at a casino, you are playing against the dealer and all cards are dealt face up.
Objective
The object of Blackjack is to get a hand scoring 21 points or as close to 21 as possible without going over. Going over 21 is an automatic loss. Otherwise, whoever scores higher, wins the hand.
Cards
Every card has a value. Numbered cards (2 – 10) hold the value of their number so that a 2 is 2, 3 is 3, etc. Face cards (jack, queen, king) have a value of 10. Aces can have a value of either 1 or 11. For example, an Ace and a 5 can be either 16 or 6 and a hand of a jack and king is 20.
The Deal
The dealer deals two cards in a row to each player, face up and then one face up and one face down for him or herself.
The Play
After the deal, the dealer asks for a play from each player. Players have a choice to stay or be hit. A hit means you receive another card to be added to your total. An ace and 10 point card on the first deal is a Blackjack. Blackjack pays 3/2 and cannot lose. If a player and a dealer both have blackjack, it is a push, or a tie, with no money being gained or lost for the player.
