Antarctica is a cold, cold place. The lowest recorded temperature on record in the past 150 years is -129 degrees Fahrenheit, and winter temperatures commonly dip down to almost 100 degrees below zero. There’s a reason that people (aside from a few token scientists) don’t live here: with the highest average elevation of any continent, it’s pretty darn cold all over.

For folks lucky enough to have been at the Vanda Station on January 5, 1974, the weather was positively balmy at 59 degrees Fahrenheit, about ten degrees colder than most people keep their homes during the winter in North America.
