The IP in IP address stands for internet protocol. This is how information from other computers connected to the internet knows to get to your computer. Each internet connection has only a single IP address that is assigned to you by your internet service provider. Some internet service providers use a dynamic IP address that changes each time you log on to the internet. Most providers, however, assign a specific static IP address that remains the same every time you log in. IP addresses are assigned to internet service providers in groups that allow them to be identified by provider and location. If your computer is connected to a home or office network, you will have multiple IP addresses. You will have a master address assigned to your main internet connection, and each computer will have a local address assigned by the router. In some cases, when looking for your IP address, you need your internet connection address, and other times, you need the local address.

Several websites exist to show you your main IP address. You can go to either http://www.find-ip-address.org/ or http://whatismyipaddress.com/ to find your main IP address. To find the local IP address of your computer and your router you can go to the Start menu in Windows and click on Run. Enter the command “ipconfig / all” without the quotes and hit enter. The number in the IP Address field is that particular computer’s local IP address, and the number in the Default Gateway field is the local IP address of the router that directs traffic from the internet connection to each computer on the network.

In windows, open a command prompt and type ipconfig to see your IP. If you're connected directly to a modem, this will show your ip. If you're going through a router or wifi hotspot, this just shows your local ip from the router to the computer -- not the IP address the internet sees. Hint: Local IPs often start with 192 or 10.
If you're wondering how to open a command prompt: In XP go to Start->Run and type cmd. In Windows Vista, the first step turn off the computer and install a different operating system. In Windows 7 - not sure yet ;)
